One of Chennai’s finest examples of Art Deco architecture, Casino Theatre, is being renovated and refurbished for the Chennai International Film Festival, which begins later this month.

The walls of the casino’s elegant stairwell are being painted a dark art deco blue, the seats are being updated, and the old 35mm film projector is being replaced with a modern 2K projector. The sound system has also been upgraded and the old air conditioning system has been replaced with a new one. All this will bring the past to life in addition to providing the best viewing and comfort to the audience.
My generation and those before me will also be glad to see that the scales in the vestibule with their flashing lights and spinning wheels, whose ability to predict the future is more reliable than a scale, have also been updated.

To fully appreciate the operation of the casino, we need to go back some 70 years and imagine Mount Road as it was then known. Mount Road was originally a carriage road from Fort George to Mount St. Thomas. It was given a modern outline by Thomas de Havilland in the early 1800s. Elphinstone reopened in 1916 (it was opposite its location as part of Misquith and Co.) and in Wellington in 1917. Paragon was also opened in 1934 and built before Chitra’s independence. , but only started working on August 15, 1948. The Globe, located next to the present LIC building, came into being in 1938. All these cinemas make Mount Road a movie lover’s paradise. Everything we find in a modern mall is within a kilometer radius of Mount Road Roundton (now Anna Monument).
Next to the Gaiety came the casino. It officially opened on Saturday, December 13, 1941, and the first film to be screened was the British comedy It Got Right Again. The theater is J. Iranian family. They hail from Pune. In the early 1930s, a family member came to Madras and found it very difficult to get ice. He returned to Pune and persuaded his family to set up an ice factory in Madras. They put it in the way of General Potters. Then a theater owner came along and set up another ice factory to compete with the Iranians. To respond to the praise, they wanted to enter the theater business and hired Star Talkies in Triplicane. They found it very useful and entertaining.
A few years later, the construction of his own thermal plant was entrusted to his eldest son Firoz J. Graduated from Engineering College, Guinda, Irani. As a student, Firoz planned to build a casino.
In the first decade, the casino only showed English films, but from the mid-1950s, it also started showing Tamil films. In 1971, they started showing only English-language films. It was ruled by Firoz and his younger brothers Minu and Farukh. When the family decided to divide the business and property, the younger brother got the theater.

A 1941 edition of the Torch magazine (mainly for the Parsi community) said of the Casino: “The whole idea of a theater is very well developed… It is the tallest cinema in the city and state… Simplicity It is its ornamentation, its naturalness is its grandeur. The interior walls, plastered with a new combination of cement, are decorated with friezes and frescoes. The floor is made of fine cement and shines richly with the color patterns of Misindia.”
